Explore Virginia Beach’s Most Haunted Landmarks

Virginia Beach may be known for its golden shoreline, fresh seafood, and vibrant nightlife—but when the sun goes down, the city reveals a spookier side. With centuries of history, tales of shipwrecks, pirates, and colonial witch trials, it’s no surprise that Virginia Beach is also home to some of the East Coast’s most legendary ghosts. If the historical homes and tales of old are too much for you, we have an incredible lineup of fun places to visit, too!

1. The Ferry Plantation House | 4136 Cheswick Lane

  • Dating back to the 1600s, this historic home is one of the city’s most haunted spots where vistories report cold spots, shadows, and whispers in the halls.
  • Said to have 11 resident ghosts, including former owners, shipwreck victims, and even Grace Sherwood, the “Witch of Pungo.”

2. Virginia Beach Surf & Rescue Museum | 2401 Atlantic Avenue

  • Formerly a U.S. Life-Saving Station, now a museum that shares the city’s maritime history with people hearing footsteps, see moving objects, and hear eeeri sounds. These especially active during storms.
  • Haunted by spirits of shipwreck victims and the brave rescuers who patrolled the coast.

3. Old Donation Church and Cemetery | 4449 N Witchduck Road

  • One of the oldest churches in Virginia Beach, with roots going back to the 1600s and ghostly aparitions have been reported in the cemetary.
  • Said to be haunted by Grace Sherwood, who worshipped there before being accused of witchcraft.

4. Cape Henry Lighthouse | 583 Atlantic Avenue (Fort Story Base)

  • Built in 1792, the old Cape Henry Lighthouse is a historic, haunted landmark where visitors can reportedly spot the spirits of sailors and keepers who never left thier post.
  • Ghostly lights, shadows, and voices have been reported by keepers and visitors over the centuries.

Virginia Beach's Most Famous Ghost (and Ghost Story)

Perhaps the most famous Virginia Beach legend is that of Grace Sherwood, remembered as the Witch of Pungo. In 1706, she was accused of witchcraft and subjected to a trial by water in the Lynnhaven River. She survived the ordeal, which by the standards of the time was proof of guilt, and spent years in jail before returning to her farm. Today, she’s remembered not as a witch but as a strong, independent woman ahead of her time. A statue in her honor stands near Sentara Bayside Hospital, and her legend is woven into many local ghost tours.
