Health Benefits While at the Beach:

When you are in dire need of a vacation or want a place to relax, what’s your go to spot? There are so many health benefits - mentally and physically - to better yourself while being at the beach. Soaking up the salty air, sand between your toes, and taking a refreshing dip in the ocean water can boost your mood and make you feel better.

Escaping Routine: A Change of Scenery

There’s a reason people love to escape work and head to the beach; it’s a change of scenery! Switching up your everyday routine is healthy and necessary. Get outside and move your body, it gets the juices flowing physically and mentally. One of our local partners, Diane Malaspina Yoga + Wellbeing, offers private and small group sessions to unwind and relax. She can come directly to your house or to the beach and you can even receive her services at a discounted price when staying with Atkinson which is great!

Walking on Sunshine: Exercise and Stress Management

Exercise has been proven to boost endorphins and helps cope with stress. According to the American Psychology Association, 62% of adults say exercise is an extremely effective way to manage stress. Taking a stroll on the beach is a great way to clear your mind and is also an exceptionally beautiful place to watch the sunrise and sunset!

Finding Peace: The Therapeutic Nature of the Shore

A peaceful day at the beach is synonymous with unwinding and being relaxed. Several different studies have shown the connection between the beach and health benefits like reduced stress and anxiety levels. In a survey done by REEF, it reveals that nearly 3 out of 4 Americans would go to the beach to alleviate stress. Clear your mind, take a deep breath of fresh air, and get your body moving in some form; you should feel much better!

The Triple Treat: Sun, Sand, and Surf

I want to talk about the 3 Ss of the beach and their impacts on our health - sun, sand, and surf. Dr. Heidi Hanna, a Fellow and Advisory Board Member for the American Institute of Stress, has conducted research on the effects the beach has on us. The sunshine beating down on your skin is such a great feeling, of course it has benefits. Such as a great source of vitamin D which is necessary for bone health and immune function, boosting our mood and energy levels, and has been shown to decrease depression.

Sand. When you think of the beach you imagine the warm, grainy sand between your toes. Hanna talks about this new phenomenon “earthing”. Connecting the human body, in this situation being barefoot on the sand, with the earth has this grounding effect to the body which in turn boosts your mood. To get more technical, the transfer of electrons from the earth into your body has reports of well-being such as better sleep and reduced pain.

The sounds of the waves crashing is a known sound for relaxation hence why people buy sound machines for sleeping. The surf isn’t just a calming factor from the noise but is also beneficial from the salty ocean water. The water can help reduce pain for those with arthritis and is very good for the skin.
